This is Falcon Field in Mesa, Arizona, the town (er, city) I grew up in.

Kinja'd!!!

During WWII Falcon Field served as a training base for British airmen. The mountain you see in the background is Red Mountain, and my parents’ house (the one I spent most of my life in) is located several miles from the base of the mountain).

Here are some other vintage photos for your viewing pleasure.

For contrast, here’s a modern photo the B-17G Flying Fortress “Sentimental Journey” that’s based there.

Kinja'd!!!

(I really need to take a ride in that thing next time I’m visiting my parents.)

Update: Because this is Oppo, a couple old timey downtown photos with old timey cars.

You should check and see if your town is on Historic Aerials . That website is a great way to see the history of your area, and lose a few days of free time.

The best I could find on a quick GIS. Confiscated moonshine equipment being displayed in front of the Hutchinson County courthouse in Stinnett, Texas. The courthouse (fairly substantial for a small rural county) was built in 1927 and still serves as the county seat today.

This really bothered me when I was living in AZ. There’s so much room everywhere, why the hell are all the houses built right on top of one another?

I’d imagine because there’s already a ton of urban sprawl, and people aren’t too into the idea of driving miles to reach their neighbors. haha

But there are plenty of houses spaced out like that once you get outside of the Phoenix-metro area. Also, if you go to the richer towns like Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, you’ll find more homes with a bit of land.

True, Phoenix is ridiculously spread out already. It’s just weird driving through hundreds of miles of nothing then coming to the cities and everything is right on top of each other.
